About Us
The centre provides comprehensive services to all patients with respiratory diseases and promotes prevention of these illnesses.

  • Diagnostic Tests
  • Pulmonary Function Test:
  • Spirometry: This test is used to measure the extent of airway obstruction in order to provide guidance on the best treatment for patients with airway diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or asthma.

  • Full Lung Function Test: This test measures the total lung capacity and the lungs’ ability to perform gaseous exchange. This is usually used in assessing the severity of restrictive lung diseases, such as fibrosing alveolitis or impaired lung function due to muscle weakness.

  • Bronchoscopy:
This procedure is used to examine the breathing passages of the lung. This can either be a diagnostic procedure or therapeutic procedure. With collaboration of the Endoscopy Centre, we provide a full range of endoscopy services, including diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopy, transbronchial needle aspiration of mediastinal lymphnodes with or without endobronchial ultrasound, thin scope and radial probe endobronchial ultrasound for peripheral lung lesions.

    Bronchoscopy is indicated for
  • unexplained symptoms related to the chest, such as
    i. persistent cough
    ii. coughing up blood
    iii. wheezing
    iv. hoarseness of voice
    v. shortness of breath
  • persistent lung collapse
  • abnormal radiological findings such as lung nodule or mass
  • identification of early lung cancer and precancerous lesions
  • diagnosis and staging of lung cancer
  • removal of foreign body from within the airway
  • delivery of endobronchial treatment (such as brachytherapy, cryotheropy, etc) to lung cancer patients.

  • Lung Cancer Detection
In Hong Kong, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality in past decades. The poor prognosis is largely due to late presentation and an inability to cure the late-stage lung cancer. With advances in technology, we are now able to detect lung cancer at earlier stages, thus leading to its cure. The centre offers tailor-made early lung cancer detection services for the high-risk population, such as:

  • current smokers or people who have ever smoked
  • people with family history of lung cancer
  • people with history of head and neck cancer
  • people with history of lung cancer
  • people with silicosis
  • people with chronic obstructive lung disease
  • people with chronic lung disease

  • For the unfortunate sufferers of lung cancer, the centre brings in wide-ranging medical, surgical & oncology specialists to render expert care, including:

  • cryotherapy
  • brachytherapy
  • chemotherapy
  • targeted therapy
  • image-guided radiotherapy

  • Smoking Cessation Service
Smoking is the single most important risk factor for non-communicable diseases, and the risk of smoking-related diseases falls after smoking cessation. In 2005, the first five leading causes of mortality in Hong Kong were all related to smoking. Due to the physical dependence induced by nicotine addiction, however, it is not easy to quit smoking without specialist assistance. The centre offers tailor-made smoking cessation services, using both pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies.
