Programme Objectives
Upon completion of this programme, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the healthcare delivery system, understand some common medical terminologies and appreciate the role of phlebotomists in healthcare teams.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of infection control and safety, including the correct handling of biological hazardous specimens.
  3. Show a basic understanding of the human circulatory system.
  4. Understand Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) in relation to the various clinical laboratory units.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of collection equipment, various types of additives used, special precautions necessary and substances that can interfere in the clinical analysis of blood constituents.
  6. Display proper techniques to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture.
  7. Demonstrate knowledge of pre-analytical errors that can significantly alter results.
  8. Show an understanding of quality assurance in laboratory.
  9. Demonstrate understanding of requisitioning, specimen transport, processing and storage.
  10. Demonstrate understanding of the basic concepts of communication, personal and patient interaction, stress management, professional behaviour and code of practice.

Medium of Instruction
Cantonese supplemented by English terminologies. PowerPoint material will be presented in English.

Programme Structure
A total of 60 contact hours spread over a 6-month period:

  1. Lectures and PowerPoint presentations (10 x 3 hours) = 30 hours total
  2. Laboratory practice sessions (5 x 3 hours) = 15 hours total, using plastic life-size arms and performance of venipuncture between students under supervision.
  3. Clinical practice (5 x 3 hours) = 15 hours / at least 50 blood draws on real patients (attachment to clinical laboratory phlebotomy team), including venipunctures and skin punctures.

Target Participants
This phlebotomy course is intended for healthcare workers that include the following categories of personnel:
1. Phlebotomists
2. Medical laboratory technician or technologists
3. Nurses
4. Heath care assistants or aides

The organizing committee will review all applications and make the final decision of acceptance to the phlebotomy course.

Minimum Entry Requirements and Other Information

  1. Form 5 or above with 5 subject passes in Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE), including English and Chinese.
  2. Applicants who possess overseas qualifications are required to possess qualifications at least equivalent to the above, or as approved by the Hong Kong Council for Academic Accreditation (HKCAA).
  3. Letter of recommendation from current or past employers is preferred.
  4. Applicants may be asked to attend an oral interview with the course organisers.
  5. Class size is limited to 30 participants to allow close monitoring of students during practical and field attachments.
  6. Selection criteria include experience, nature of job and the employer. If over-subscribed, a quota system will be used to ensure that applicants from different healthcare institutions all get equal opportunity to enrol.
  7. The decision of the organizing committee regarding application acceptance or rejection is final.

Assessment
Students will receive a certificate from the Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital and will be eligible to apply for Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) examination by ASCPi upon successful completion of all parts of the programme, including:

  1. Above 80% overall attendance (both lectures and practical sessions)
  2. Completion of student portfolio (at least 50 successful blood collections).
    Participants not employed by the Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital may complete the clinical training (i.e. at least 50 successful blood collections) at the institution when they work only if approved by the organizing committee and must be documented and signed by the Laboratory Director (pathologist or biomedical scientist) of the institution. Otherwise clinical attachment will be undertaken at Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital.
  3. Written examination:
    A two-hour MCQ examination on theories taught in lectures
  4. Practical examination:
    Examination on full phlebotomy techniques, including venipuncture, capillary collection, safety and problem solving

Tution Fee
Staff of Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital: HK$ 500 deposit and full refund upon completion of course and passing the assessment

External applicants: HK$ 5,000

Continuing Nursing Education (CNE): 30 points

Applicants will be notified 2 weeks before commencement through mail whether the application is successful. All information received will be handled in strict confidence and used only for course application purposes. Applications will not be processed if information / documents provided are incomplete.
